Gospel choirs, ensembles, praise dancers, gospel rappers, drill teams and other gospel performers are invited to enter the 2008 Detroit Gospel Showcase & Awards and give praise, thanks and glory to God. Choirs may enter to showcase their talents, or vie for thousands of dollars in prizes.

Program Details

The 2008 Detroit Gospel Showcase & Awards will be held at Fellowship Chapel, 7707 W. Outer Dr., Detroit, MI 48235

Date: Saturday, November 1, 2008

Time: Program begins at 5:00 PM doors open at 3:00 PM, Vendors start selling at 3:00 PM.

Judging: A panel of music industry professional and executives will conduct the judging. Decisions of the judges are final.

Recognition: Choirs participating in the program will be recognized as among the best choirs in Metropolitan Detroit

To participate in the 2008 Detroit Gospel Showcase & Awards gospel choirs can participate in one of two categories, the choir competition or the showcase in which choirs perform without competing.

  • "Youth Choir" members must be 18 years of age and younger (if a member is older than 18 years of age they will be classified as an "Adult Choir."
  • "Adult Choir" members are usually 19 years of age and older but younger members may participate in adult choirs.
  • Gospel choirs-whether from churches, schools, and community groups or from other affiliations-are invited to submit an audition tape and photo by Friday August 22, 2008. (There is no entry fee to enter).

Category I, The Competition

Gospel choirs interested in competing for cash prizes may apply for the competition category. This category will include both "Youth Choirs" (members must be 18years and younger) and "Adult Choirs." Cash prizes will be awarded to five winning choirs as selected by the judges:

Prizes in the Adult Choir Category

  • 1st Place Adult Choir - $3,000
  • 2nd Place Adult Choir - $2,000
  • 3rd Place Adult Choir - $1,000

Prizes in the Youth Choir category

  • 1st Place Youth Choir - $500
  • 2nd Place Youth Choir - $250

Category 2, The Showcase:

The Showcase category is open to "Youth and Adult" gospel choirs, praise dancers, gospel rappers, drill teams, and other gospel performers that want to showcase their talents but are not in the competition category that is reserved for gospel choirs.

Participation Requirements

  • Choirs are either in the competition or showcase category
  • Youth Choirs are ages 18 years of age and younger
  • Adult choirs can include any age members
  • Other participants are in the showcase category
  • All performers will be supported with a pre-recorded background track or sing acquapello
  • Participants will be given a maximum of 5 minutes to perform
  1. Any "Youth or Adult Choir" that would like to compete must submit an audition tape and photo of their choir to the Detroit Gospel Showcase & Awards, Attn: Derryl L. Reed, 3297 Woodview Lake Road, Suite 100, West Bloomfield, MI 48323 by Friday August 22, 20087. All audition tapes submitted are the property of the judging committee and must be labeled with the name, address and telephone number of the church, the pastor's name and the name of the choir's musical director, along with their e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers. A completed application must be included in the envelope along with your audition tape. (See attached application).
  2. A panel of judges will select "Adult Choirs" and "Youth Choirs, from among the audition tapes that are submitted, to compete in the finals of the Competition Category, which will be held on Saturday November 1, 2008.
  3. A panel of judges will select praise dancers, drill teams, soloist, sign mine and other performers to perform in the Showcase Category, from among the audition tapes that are submitted to showcase on Saturday November 1, 2008.
  4. The choirs selected for the event will be notified by Friday August 29th and a representative of the choir is required to attend a mandatory meeting on Saturday morning 9/13/08 at 11:00 AM at Fellowship Chapel.
  5. Each Adult Choir will be permitted a maximum of 75 members to perform including the musical director.
  6. Each Youth Choir will be permitted a maximum of 25 members to perform including the musical director.
  7. Each performance will be given a maximum of 5 minutes to perform one selection of their choice. Choirs going over this time limitation will have points deducted from their score.
  8. Choirs will be judged on a scale of 1 to 10 based on the following criteria:
    • Technical Merit (The ability to sing in harmony and demonstrated musical skill)
    • Originality (Musical presentation displayed unique, creative and original qualities and musical arrangement)
    • Stage Presence (The ability to move the audience, creativity, enthusiasm and their general appearance)
    • Professionalism (Entrance and exit, choir formation, attire and posture)
  9. The pastor and the musical director of each church that submits an audition tape will also receive two complimentary tickets to the competition on Saturday November 1, 2008 (whether their choir is one of the finalist or not).
  10. All participants must perform to a pre-recorded track of music.

Legacy Awards

The Legacy Award is presented to individual that have dedicated their lives to serving the Lord, outstanding personal achievements and helping others. Their accomplishments and their ability to overcome obstacles are outstanding examples for others to follow. Past honorees have included Dr. Mattie Moss Clarke, Donald Lawrence, Gospel Queen Albertina Walker, The Barrett Sisters, Reverend Clay Evans and Reverend Dr. Johnnie Colemon (Christ Universal Temple).

A galaxy of greats from Detroit's religious and gospel community will be presented the Legacy Award during the 4th Annual Detroit Gospel Showcase & Awards program.

  • If you would like to nominate someone for this year's Legacy Award, please send me a letter of recommendation that identifies their commitment to serving God, community service, personal achievements and overcoming obstacles.

Please join us for an awesome evening of giving praise, thanks and glory to God. Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Fellowship Chapel, 7701 W. Outer Drive, Detroit, MI 48235. Program starts promptly at 5:00 PM with doors opening at 3:00 PM for the Merchant's Fair. Vendors for the event will be available beginning at 3:00 PM.

General admission tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, VIP tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door (which includes upfront reserved seating).
